We get asked a lot about our blog's title. It might seem as though "And So Are They" is a pretty random title for most any blog, let alone a blog about parenting within the Unitarian Universalist church. However, we're pretty certain that if you've ever read "Old Turtle and the Broken Truth" by Douglas Wood, you'll have a pretty clear idea of our namesake.
The story is about a truth, a glittering rock, that is picked up by man and held to be the only Truth. Upon the rock are the words "you are loved" and this begins wars among the men, as each group of them believe that the truth is meant for them alone. Years of misery and fighting fall upon the Earth, and it is not until a young girl seeks out the wise Old Turtle that there is a glimmer of hope. Old Turtle gives the girl another glittering stone and she takes it back to the place where the people of the world keep their truth high on a pedestal. To everyone's amazement, the glittering stone the girl carries fits together with their truth to form a whole truth, "you are loved... and so are they." Suddenly, mankind can recognize and respect that the differences between them are wonderful and all are worthy of love.
If you've read the book, you also know that it is told by Douglas Wood far more poetically than has been done here and that the moral of the tale arguably goes deeper than we've touched upon. If you haven't read it, we encourage you to pick up a copy of this marvelous tale and read it for yourself and for your family. It's simply beautiful.
There you have it, the inspiration behind our blog's title. Suddenly it's all so clear now, right?
